The people tell the story.

Why Call Mel?

When I joined the company as employee number 24, my first job wasn't building an HR department. It was building a company that could scale.

The company had built something special. Revenue was growing. Customers were happy. The team was expanding quickly. But the infrastructure hadn't kept pace.

There were no formal people systems. New hire paperwork was still being mailed and processed manually. Compensation decisions were being made on the fly. Hiring was decentralized. Leadership development didn't exist. Leaders had been promoted because they were great at their jobs, but not necessarily because they knew how to lead others.

Those things hadn't been problems when the company was small. Now they were becoming barriers to growth.

I built the people infrastructure the company needed to scale, from hiring, onboarding, compensation, performance management, and leadership development to engagement strategies and scalable organizational systems.

But the real work wasn't building systems.

It was building trust.

I became a strategic partner to the CEO, a coach to leaders, and a translator between business goals and people strategy. I learned every corner of the business because great organizational decisions can't be made in a vacuum. They have to support where the company is going.

A few years later, that foundation was put to the ultimate test when the company entered a merger and acquisition process with its largest competitor.

What followed were months of due diligence, organizational redesign, integration planning, leadership alignment, and change management. We rebuilt the organization to support its next stage of growth while bringing two companies, two cultures, and two leadership teams together under one vision.

That experience showed me what it really takes to position a company for M&A.

It isn't simply about preparing for a transaction. It's about building the organizational foundation that allows a company to scale through the complexity of one.

The right people. The right leaders. The right structure. The right systems. And the organizational clarity to support what comes next.

Because positioning a company for M&A starts long before the deal is on the table.

I Build Companies
‍ That Can Outgrow Me.

Most people assume I ended up in Human Resources because I love people.

They’re only partially right.

I ended up here because I love solving complex problems.

Throughout my career, I’ve helped companies navigate transformation: rapid growth, acquisitions, mergers, restructures, leadership transitions, and the growing pains that come with success. While those challenges often show up as people problems on the surface, I’ve learned they’re almost always business problems at their core.

Misaligned leadership. Unclear accountability. Organizational structures that no longer support growth. Cultures that were built by accident instead of intention.

Those are the puzzles I love solving.

Ironically, it took me years to realize the same pattern shows up in one of my favorite hobbies: flipping houses. I don't get excited about move-in-ready homes. I love the ones that need to be torn down to the studs, rebuilt, and reimagined. The challenge isn't seeing what exists. It's seeing what could be.

That's exactly how I've approached every stage of my career.

I helped scale an enterprise software company from a growing business into a global organization, supporting international expansion, recruiting hundreds of employees, and contributing to a successful acquisition and exit. Later, I joined a SaaS company with virtually no People infrastructure in place and built the foundation from the ground up. As Chief People Officer, I led the people strategy through a merger and acquisition, integrating teams, systems, cultures, and leadership structures while preparing the organization for its next phase of growth.

Those experiences taught me something I now tell founders & CEO's all the time:

Most companies don't have a growth problem.

They have a scale-readiness problem.

The leadership, systems, and processes that helped you reach 20 employees are rarely the same ones that will successfully carry you to 100. Growth creates complexity. Complexity creates friction. And eventually, even great companies find themselves stuck.

Over time, I realized the work I loved most wasn't maintaining what had already been built. It was helping build it in the first place. I loved walking into complexity, understanding what was holding a company back, and creating the systems, leadership structures, and cultural foundations needed to scale. Then watching those organizations thrive on their own.

Eventually, I asked myself a simple question:

What if I could do this for more than one company?

That's why I launched Mel Richardson Talent & People Strategy.

As a Fractional Chief People Officer and scale partner, I help founders identify what's slowing growth and build the people, leadership, and organizational infrastructure needed to move forward. I combine executive-level strategy with hands-on execution, helping companies create clarity, accountability, scalable systems, strong leaders, and cultures that can support the business they're becoming, not just the business they are today.

I earn trust at every level of an organization, from founders and executives to first-time managers and frontline employees. I challenge people, coach leaders, ask hard questions, and create the kind of relationships where people feel comfortable telling the truth. Because the fastest way to solve a problem is to understand what's really happening.

My approach is intentionally different from traditional consulting. I'm not interested in creating dependency or securing a multi-year engagement. I get in, understand the business, solve the right problems, build the foundation, and prepare your team to carry it forward long after I'm gone.

Because the greatest compliment I can receive isn't that you still need me.

It's that you don't.

That's when I know we've built something that will last.
